Corfu, Greece
Corfu, Greece
This morning the Encore is docked at Corfu, (Kerkyra in Greek). It is one of the Ionian Islands in western Greece, and is separated by the Straits of Corfu from the mainland of Greece and Albania. It is the northwestern-most portion of Greece. We have a relaxing morning on the Encore, since our shore excursion does not begin until after lunch. I visited Corfu in April 2015. I wandered on my own and was able to see much of the Old Fortress area and the streets of the Old Town.

Today we are on a shore excursion that takes us out of the city to visit Mon Repos Palace, before returning to the Old City. Mon Repos Palace was built in 1828 as a summer residence for the second British High Commissioner of the Ionian Islands, Sir Frederic Adam.
. . . and the downhill walk through the park passes by interesting stone work.
From Mon Repos, the tour takes us on a drive to another viewpoint that overlooks Corfu's largest lake and the island's small airport.
We return to the city, where we witness a more and more typical "welcome" as we walk through a city gate.
Will is worn out from our earlier walking at Mon Repos--and I have been here before--so we take only a short stroll along the labyrinthian streets of the city (designed to confuse pirates and invaders), and then take the Seabourn shuttle back to the port and the Encore. One of the good Seabourn perks is that they provide free shuttle buses from the port to the city center almost everywhere.

There is another "Abba and Caviar" sailaway on the pool deck at 5pm, where we enjoy our pre-dinner martinis--Will's with olive, mine with a twist of lemon.
